McGill University and the Sexual Assault Centre of McGill Students’ Society (SACOMSS) is founded upon the unceded traditional territories of the Kanien’kehà:ka Nation, the keepers of the Eastern Door of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and the rightful stewards of these lands and waters. The island of so-called Montréal, known in the Kanien’kéha language as Tiohtià:ke, has long served as a site of meeting and exchange amongst Indigenous peoples including the Anishnaabeg and other Nations. Today, it is home to a diverse population of Indigenous and other peoples.

Colonialism and white supremacy are systems of structural violence, and many forms of violence, including sexual violence, are actively used to maintain the power of these structures. For those of us who are settlers on these lands, it is vital to keep this constantly in our minds, so that we can move forward as an organization to actively resist colonialism in all its forms and manifestations.
